Giana Magnoli - Managing editor
Giana Magnoli is a journalism senior and has worked on the Mustang Daily as a reporter, copy editor and news editor. She received Best Rookie Reporter in her first quarter as a staff writer and, after reporting for every section of the paper, discovered that news was her niche.
She loves talking to fascinating people and reporting from the scene of the story, and some of her favorite stories to cover have been the visit of Weird Al, the fire that forced students out of their home a few months before graduation, and featuring the international students at Cal Poly. She also loves getting into in-depth pieces, such as the story introducing the liberal arts and engineering studies major to the campus.
As news editor, she was responsible for providing coverage of important campus issues as well as profiling interesting people and places on campus and in the neighboring community. She provided in-depth coverage of major happenings on campus such as the ASI presidential elections and the controversial College of Engineering collaboration with a Saudi Arabian university. When no one else could cover a story, she would be there, notebook in hand.
Now, she oversees the paper and helps reporters, photographers and editors work together to turn out an outstanding product. She hopes to improve every aspect of the paper and keep the award-winning Web site cutting edge and current with breaking news coverage.
Magnoli received the Department Head Leadership Award and the George Ramos Scholarship Award in June 2008 from departing department head George Ramos for her work as a news editor and reporter.
